“I’m very worried.”
Doosan won 7-2 at home against the Kiwoom Heroes at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul on Feb. 2. Doosan picked up its 70th win of the season (2 wins, 61 losses) and remained in fourth place. At the same time, last-place Kiwoom suffered its 81st loss of the season (3 D, 55 L).
Third-place NC suffered its 60th loss of the season (2 ties, 70 wins) as it was swept by Hanwha, while Doosan closed the gap on NC to 0.5 games.
Doosan’s starting lineup on the day was Jung Soo-bin (center field), Cho Su-hyun (right field), Jose Rojas (left field), Yang Ji (catcher), Yang Seok-hwan (first base), Kim Jae-hwan (designated hitter), Kang Seung-ho (second base), Park Jun-young (shortstop), and Heo Kyung-min (third base).
The starting pitcher, Brandon, was outstanding. He pitched six innings, giving up three hits, four walks, and two strikeouts. He was followed by Park, who pitched three innings of two-run ball to earn his first career save.
With the win, Brandon became the seventh substitute foreign player in history to reach the 10-win plateau. Brandon’s first start was on June 24, and he is only the second substitute foreign player in history to reach 10 wins in June, joining William Cuevas (KT) this year. At the plate, Yang Seok-hwan led the offense with three hits. Kang Seung-ho had a multi-hit game and Park Jun-young had a two-hit game.
A perfect two-hitter. Doosan couldn’t smile after the game.
In the top of the first inning, Kiwoom starting pitcher Jang Jae-young was hit by a pitch and taken to the hospital. Jang gave up back-to-back straight balls to the first two batters before getting Rojas to fly out to center field. Yang then walked to load the bases, but a pitch from Yang Seok-hwan was aimed at Jang’s head. The ball deflected off Jang’s head, allowing two runners to cross the plate.
Ki and a Doosan trainer came onto the field to check Jang’s condition. An ambulance came onto the field, but Jang picked himself up and walked off the field.
Luckily, he escaped serious injury. A representative from Kiwoom said, “The CT scan showed no unusual findings. However, since he was hit in the head, we will continue to monitor his condition.”안전놀이터
After the game, Doosan was also worried about Jang Jae-young’s condition.
Doosan coach Lee Seung-yeop said after the game, “I hope Jang Jae-young is not seriously injured. I’m very worried and hope to see him back on the field soon.”
Yang’s expression was even darker after he unintentionally hit the pitch. He later added two more hits for a three-hit game, but he wasn’t smiling after the game. “My heart was heavy throughout the game. I checked with the manager in between and was relieved to hear that there were no major injuries, but I’m still worried because it’s such a sensitive area,” he said. “I sincerely hope and support him to finish the season well, not only physically, but also mentally so that he doesn’t have any after-effects from being hit by a pitch.”
