Kang So-hwi and Lee Han-bi combine for 33 points as women’s volleyball falls to Germany in straight sets

The South Korean women’s volleyball team, coached by Cesar Hernández González, earned its first point of the Paris 2024 Olympic Qualification campaign. The Koreans fell 2-3 (13-25 21-25 25-23 25-22 7-15) to Germany in a tightly contested match that went to a full set on Monday (Sept. 19) in Łódź, Poland, in the third Pool C match of the Olympic Qualification Tournament.

It was South Korea’s third loss of the tournament, but the first in a row. Germany improved to 3-0. With the loss, the ‘Cesaros’ are now faced with the prospect of missing out on the ticket to Paris, which is awarded to the first and second place finishers in the group.

Germany also got strong performances from their middle blockers. Camilla Weitzel had 17 points and four blocks, while Marie Schulzel chipped in with 15 points and three blocks.

South Korea came from behind on the day, but rallied in the final five sets. South Korea got off to a bad start.

They were unable to fight back in the first set and easily lost the set to Germany. In the second set, they fought back a bit, but it wasn’t enough. They were backed into a corner as they lost the set.

South Korea didn’t go down easily in the third set. They exchanged points and at 23-23, Lee Han-bi’s spike worked to save a set point at 24-23.

On the next rally, Park Eun-jin’s attempted serve came back over the net after an opponent reception and Lee Da-hyun connected with a direct kill to take the set 25-23.

Changing the mood, Korea put the pressure on Germany in the fourth set with Kang So-hwi leading the way. They matched fire with fire on offense and it worked.

However, South Korea did not have the same performance in the fifth set as in the previous two sets.
