After five months and 19 games without a goal, Ahn is in top form. Now, he’s fighting for Suwon’s survival in the remaining matches.
Suwon came from behind to win 3-2 in the ‘Suwon Derby’ against Suwon FC in the 36th round of the Hana OneQ K League 2023 at Suwon Sports Complex on Wednesday.
After conceding a goal to Hugo Gomes in the 30th minute while Kazuki was sent off in the first half, Suwon equalized through Acosti in the 48th minute of first-half stoppage time. After taking the lead eight minutes into the second half through Ahn Byung-joon, Suwon conceded again seven minutes later through Kim Hyun. Yeom made an aggressive substitution and Kim Ju-chan scored the dramatic winner in the 33rd minute.
Suwon managed to hold on for the three points despite being one man short. While they remain in 12th place (7W, 8D, 21L – 29 points), they have closed the gap on 11th place Gangwon (5W, 15D, 16L – 30 points) back to one point.
Ahn Byung-joon reactivated his goal-scoring touch after a five-month absence, scoring in the league’s 17th round away match against Gwangju on June 7. The striker had struggled with injury over the summer, missing seven games in the regular season.
Ahn regained his form in the fall with increased playing time and made his presence felt with a thunderous mid-range strike after 19 league games. Like his goal against Gangwon in the 13th round, he raced around the goal and made a ceremony towards the supporters’ section. He didn’t make much of a move, just walked towards the supporters.
“Actually, with Gangwon winning yesterday, today’s game was really important for us, and that part (Gangwon’s win) was actually a little bit of pressure before the game. And I’m very happy that we were able to come back and win in such a way because it wasn’t easy, even with the sending off at the beginning of the game.”
On his first goal in a long time, he said, “First of all, I’m happy to score a goal in a game that the team won. I will work hard to do better not only today but also in the remaining matches.”
