Dizzying PK dedication, Shin Kwang-hoon saves the day with “I’m keeping my 4-2 promise…”

Shin Kwang-hoon (Pohang Steelers) saved the day.

Pohang won the 2023 Hana OneQ FA Cup with a 4-2 victory over Jeonbuk Hyundai on Thursday afternoon at the Pohang Steelyard.

It’s their first FA Cup title in 10 years. The last time Pohang won the FA Cup was in 2013, against Jeonbuk. Pohang repeated their victory from a decade ago with a hard-fought 4-2 win, tying them with Jeonbuk and Suwon Samsung for the most titles with five.

There was one player who went to heaven and hell in that final. It was Shin Kwang-hoon. Pohang’s veteran and spiritual leader, Shin Kwang-hoon, started the game at right back against Jeonbuk. However, he conceded a penalty in the fifth minute of the second half of a 1-1 game, which led to Jeonbuk’s goal.

Shin was then replaced by Shim Sang-min to finish the game. However, Pohang turned the game around. After Zeca’s equalizer, Kim Jong-woo scored the game-winner, and Hong Yun-sang added another goal in the final minute to complete the feat.

After the game, Shin Kwang-hoon said, “It’s our first win in 10 years, and it’s nice to do it at home. I gave the PK, but I’m grateful that the juniors saved the senior. It was very early and there was a lot of time left, so I thought we could score at least one goal at home. I didn’t think they would come back with four goals. I’m really grateful,” he said.

Shin Kwang-hoon said about conceding the penalty: “The coach told me, ‘I tried to keep my promise. I said, ‘Congratulations, it’s your first championship. We have five trophies, and we won three together. “But I’m proud of it because I think it’s weird,” he said, “and he also said, ‘You’re going to hell.’ Everybody said that. The coaching staff was like that. I won the championship, so I can accept everything.”

Shin Kwang-hoon chose Hong Yoon-sang as his MVP. “When the ball goes to Yoon Sang, I feel comfortable. He scored and changed the atmosphere a lot,” he said, expressing his gratitude.
