Not exactly a ‘big game pitcher’. KT Wiz ace William Cuevas gave up an unexpectedly large number of runs and fell apart early.
KT sent Cuevas to the mound for Game 1 of the playoffs (best-of-5) against the NC Dinos at KT Wiz Park in Suwon on Tuesday. It made sense. Since returning to the rotation in June as a replacement for Bo Schuler, Cuevas has gone 12-0 with a 2.60 ERA in 18 games.
Above all, Cuevas was strong in the big games. In 2021, he pitched seven shutout innings in the first-place game against the Samsung Lions to help the team advance to the Korean Series (KS). He did so on just two days’ rest after his regular-season start. In Game 1 of the KS against the Doosan Bears, he pitched seven and two-thirds innings of one-run ball to help the team win the series.
However, it was a different story in his second appearance in fall baseball. Cuevas gave up a leadoff single to Son As-seob in the first inning and a double to Park Min-woo in the second. He struck out Park to give himself some breathing room, but eventually gave up a sacrifice fly to Jason Martin to take the lead. In the second, Oh gave up a solo shot to Young-Soo Oh. The pitch was high on a 3-ball-2 strike, and it was a home run.토토사이트
Luck was not on his side. In the top of the third, an error by third baseman Hwang Jae-gyun allowed Park Min-woo to walk and Park Gun-woo to hit a double down the left field line. Park Min-woo stole second and third and came home on the replay. In the next at-bat, Kwon Hee-dong singled to score the fourth run.
Moon Sang-chul’s homer made it 1-4, but the gap widened again. Kim Hyung-jun walked, and when Kim Joo-won laid down a sacrifice bunt, Cuevas made a throwing error. He made a quick grab and threw to second for the out, but the throw was short and went behind the plate. Son was hit by a pitch.
Eventually, Cuevas, who was hit by a pitch, handed the mound over to Uhm Sang-baek. Uhm allowed the tying run to score, bringing Cuevas’ final line to 7 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits and 2 walks in 3 innings. Kwon Hee-dong’s two-run double cut KT’s deficit to 1-8 and seven runs.
