The KIA Tigers knocked off the first-place LG Twins in a close game.
KIA won the first game of a doubleheader against LG in the 2023 Shinhan Bank Throwdown KBO League 7-6 on Monday at Gwangju-KIA Champions Field.
Fifth-place KIA (58 wins, 2 losses, 52 draws), which had lost two straight after its nine-game winning streak came to a halt, is back in winning mode.
No. 1 LG (70W2L45) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end after dropping a close game.
KIA used eight pitchers in the first game of the doubleheader to secure the win. Choi Ji-min, the team’s seventh pitcher, picked up the win with ⅓ inning of scoreless relief after substitute starter Hwang Dong-ha gave up two runs in 4⅓ innings.
Kia’s top hitter, Park Chan-ho, was the offensive spark, going 3-for-5 with a home run and an RBI.
LG was unable to prevent a heartbreaking upset despite utilizing its bullpen. Reliever Yoo Young-chan took the loss with two runs in ⅔ of an inning.
It was Kia who took control of the game.
Tied 0-0 in the third inning, KIA scored two runs on Hwang Dae-in’s left field solo shot (his fifth of the season) and Na Sung-bum’s RBI double.
In the fourth inning, LG scored another run on a fielding error. With one out, Lee Woo-sung’s grounder to shortstop Oh Ji-hwan slipped between his legs, allowing third baseman Socrates Brito to dive home.
Down 3-0 in the fifth inning, LG scored its first run on three consecutive singles by Oh Ji-hwan, Park Dong-won and Moon Sung-joo. Park Hae-min’s sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third, and Hong Chang-ki’s sacrifice fly to right field made it 2-3.
KIA came back with two runs in the sixth inning.
Lee Woo-sung doubled and Hwang Dae-in walked to put runners on first and third, and Kim Tae-gun singled to right. Kim Gyu-sung then scored on a wild pitch.
Not letting up on the chase, LG scored four runs in the seventh inning to take the lead after trailing 2-5.
One inning later, Park Dong-won started the comeback with a solo home run (his 20th of the season).
After Moon Sung-joo and Park Hae-min drew back-to-back walks to put runners on first and second, Hong Chang-ki hit a single to right. While the KIA defense took care of the runners, Moon Sung-joo scored from second base and Park Hae-min rushed home from third base to tie the game.
With runners on second and third, Kim Hyun-soo hit a grounder to bring in Hong Chang-ki from third to make it 6-5.
However, KIA refused to give up and turned the tide again in the eighth inning.
After back-to-back singles by Kim Sun-bin and Lee Woo-sung put runners on first and second, pinch-hitter Ko Jong-wook lined a single to right to tie the game. With runners on first and second, Park Chan-ho singled up the middle off LG closer Ko Woo-seok, who was brought in early.
KIA closer Jung Hae-young gave up a walk to the first batter of the ninth inning, Hong Chang-ki, putting runners on second and third, but he got pinch-hitter Seo Gun-chang to ground out to third base to preserve the one-run victory.
In Jamsil, the Samsung Lions won the first game of a doubleheader against the Doosan Bears 5-1.
Ninth-ranked Samsung (51-1, 67) snapped a two-game losing streak after bouncing back from an upset loss the day before (7-8). Sixth-ranked Doosan (57-1-1), which has a lot of ground to make up, failed to win its third straight.
Samsung starter David Buchanan pitched eight innings of seven-hit, one-run ball to improve to 10-6 on the season. It was his fourth straight year with double-digit wins.

Doosan immediately responded.
In the bottom of the second, Yang Seok-hwan and Kim Jae-hwan singled to put runners on first and second with one out before Kang Seung-ho broke the silence.
In the top of the third, Kim Hyun-jun blasted a triple down the right field line to put runners on first and third. The next batter, Kim Sung-yoon, hit a grounder to the first baseman, but Kim scored from third with his quick feet.
Samsung took a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning.
With one out, Oh Jae-il hit a double to the top of the right field fence, and Lee Jae-hyun followed with a single up the middle. Kim Ho-jae followed with a timely double that slipped past third baseman Heo Kyung-min to make it 5-1.
With runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth, Samsung brought in closer Oh Seung-hwan. Oh struck out Lee Yoo-chan and Cho Soo-hyun on fly balls to earn his 24th save of the season.
In Changwon, the Lotte Giants took the first game of a doubleheader from the NC Dinos with a 5-2 victory.
Seventh-place Lotte (55-61) ended third-place NC’s (61-2-52) bid for a fifth straight win.
Lotte starter Park Se-woong threw 112 pitches in 6⅔ innings of two-run ball to earn his sixth win of the season. He allowed six hits and one walk while striking out nine.
At the plate, Jeon Jun-woo led the way with a 2-for-4 performance and two RBIs, while Jung Hoon, who came in as a pinch-hitter, went 1-for-2 with the game-winning home run.
NC starter Song Myung-ki suffered his eighth loss of the season (3-3) after allowing three runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.
NC top hitter Son As-seop could not smile in the loss after recording his 150th hit of the season, making him the first player in the KBO to reach 150 hits in eight consecutive years.
Lotte scored four runs in the sixth inning after falling behind 0-2.
Lee Jung-hoon singled to right and Ahn Chi-hong doubled to left field to put runners on second and third, and Jeon Jun-woo hit a two-run double to left field to tie the game at 2-2.
With the bases loaded and two outs, pinch-hitter Jung Hoon took advantage of NC reliever Kim Young-gyu’s first pitch and launched a two-run arch over the left field fence. It was Jung-hoon’s fifth career pinch-hit home run.
