The Doosan Bears’ fearsome run at the top of the standings has come to an end. The team has been on a downward spiral without their star catcher Yang Yang-ji, who is out with an injury. Doosan needs to turn things around.
Doosan had a fantastic July, winning a franchise-record 11 games in a row last month. They jumped from sixth to third in the standings and closed the gap on second-place SSG Landers to three games.
But just when it looked like they were going to shake up the top spot, Doosan crashed and burned. After an 11-game winning streak, they fell into a five-game losing streak.
To add insult to injury, key offensive player Yang Yang-ji suffered a side injury on June 6 and was removed from the first team roster two days later.
Doosan felt Yang’s absence acutely. In the 11 games they played after Yang’s departure, they only managed two wins. After the 11-game winning streak, the team went 5-14.
The slump saw Doosan (49 wins, 1 draw, 50 losses) drop to fifth place, chased by the sixth-place KIA Tigers (47 wins, 2 draws, 48 losses) and the seventh-place Lotte Giants (50 wins, 52 losses). They are tied with Kia and only half a game behind Lotte.
In the midst of the misery, there was some good news for Doosan. It appears that Yang Ji has made a quick recovery and will return to the team earlier than expected.
A Doosan official said of Yang, “He underwent an MRI examination at the hospital on the afternoon of the 18th, and was told that he is about 90% recovered. We will adjust the timing of his return according to the progress.”
Doosan, which has lost five straight games, had its game against the NC Dinos canceled due to rain on the 18th. Not a bad thing for Doosan. With the mood sagging, the team took a day off to catch its breath.
