You never know! WK League regular season winner to be decided in final game

The regular season winner of the 2023 WK League will be decided in the final match.

The 20th round of the 2023 WK League saw a mixed bag of results for the top teams, with leader Hwacheon KSPO falling to bottom-placed Mungyeong Sangmu. Second-place Suwon FC Wimin and third-place Incheon Hyundai Steel kept their chances of an upset alive with side-by-side wins.

Hwacheon KSPO lost 0-2 away to Mungyeong Sangmu in Round 20 on the 25th. They conceded an early goal to Choi Ji-kyung in the 23rd minute of the first half and fell behind to Han Ah-yeong in the 49th minute. In second place, Suwon FC Wimin thrashed Changnyeong WFC 4-0 away from home. Choo Hyo-joo scored a multi-goal performance, while Moon Mi-ra and Ji So-yeon joined in the goal storm. The win puts pressure on Hwacheon KSPO, who are on 39 points.

Incheon Hyundai Steel, looking for their 11th consecutive win, also defeated Gyeongju Hansuwon 3-0 away from home. Goals from Choi Yoo-ri and Chung Seol-bin, as well as an own goal from the opponent, completed the victory. With the three points, the team reached 39 points and rekindled its championship hopes.

The final match on Sept. 29 will determine the regular season champion. The winner of the Big Bang between the first and second-place teams, Hwacheon KSPO and Suwon FC Wimin, at the Suwon Sports Complex, is likely to come out on top. Hwacheon KSPO will clinch the title on its own with a win, while Suwon FC Wimin will need to win and share goal difference with Incheon Hyundai Steel.

Incheon Hyundai Steel still has a chance to win the title. If they win at home against the Seoul Metropolitan Government on the 29th and Suwon FC Wimin and Hwacheon KSPO draw in the final game, they can pull off a dramatic upset. They are currently +16 in goal differential, behind Suwon FC Wimin (+21), and a draw would make their chances of winning the title very slim.

Meanwhile, the regular season winner will go straight to the championship game. In November, the second- and third-place finishers in the regular season will play a single-leg playoff game at the home of the second-place finisher, with the winner playing the regular season champion twice.
